Blog Post: Get The Look: Menswear Spring/Summer 2014

Gone are the days when casual menswear trends were defined by graphic tees, distressed denim, and sneakers. To say that the fellas have moved on would be a true understatement. The upcoming Spring/Summer climate is comprised of envelope-pushing, slightly gender-neutral looks that will add an element of creativity to your regular ensemble-building routine.

We understand that many of this year’s looks might be a tad intimidating for even the most fashion-conscious man. In an effort to ease you into the action, we’ve come up with a few recommendations that will keep you on-trend and breathing easy.

The Gear

Colors and bold patterns, once viewed by the fashion world as trends that only women would respond to, have been popping up on the runways of menswear designers everywhere. The houses of Phillip Lim, Gucci, and Frankie Morello are letting the world know that men have taken up residence in whimsical, highly stylized arenas that have historically been populated solely by women. This is undoubtedly the first time we’ve ever seen menswear selections include v-neck sweater vests paired with leather shorts. We’ve certainly never witnessed an interpretation of men’s corporate wear that includes leather-infused shirts coupled with wide-leg pants. One word: exciting!

The Hair

From pompadours to undercuts to quiffs, we’re seeing current menswear trends accented by a plethora of styles. The look by which we are most taken is the "French roll". At first glance, we weren’t completely sold, as this option will require daily attention. However, upon a closer look, we realized its sheer edginess and European-chic quotient. Dare to be fearless this year!

The Accessories

The trend here is just as bold as the couture. We’ve noted mule sandals in bright primaries, a menswear take on the clutch bag, and floral bucket hats. Does it get more exciting than that? Well, maybe. The streamlined, leather take on the handheld weekender – a look that stole our hearts last fall – is, hands-down, our pick for favorite.
